The Making of a Cover

These past two weeks we’ve been touting beautiful, eye-catching book covers, and talking about why they grab our attention.

Today, I thought it would be interesting to look at book covers from a different angle: the making of the cover.

Here’s an interesting video from Random House Books, talking with book cover designers about their designs:

Love's AwakeningBurning SkyHere’s a link to a blog post on Brandon Hill Photos that shows the cover shoot for Laura Frantz‘s new release Love’s Awakening (an excellent novel!) –

And another link to Lori Benton‘s blog post on the making of the cover for her debut release, Burning Sky (another terrific read!) –

I’d love to know your thoughts about the making of these covers.

  1. I’m always amazed at how much thought and planning goes into a cover. I’m espcecially intrigued by the “cover shoot.” Thanks for sharing Brandon Hill’s blog about Laura’s cover.

  2. Wonderful video, Brenda! And I appreciate the shout out about Brandon’s fine work, etc. Glad to see Lori’s beautiful debut here, too. You’ve made my day!

I’ve been wanting to visit my publisher and one of the biggest draws for me is to meet the design team. You’ve heightened that wish :). Thank you.

  3. Thanks for highlighting Burning Sky, Brenda, and Laura’s Love’s Awakening (I remember my reaction when I first saw that cover, the WOW factor, followed swiftly by a fascination with the delicate beauty and soulful eyes of Ellie).

I enjoyed that video of Random House cover artists talking about their craft. It really is one of the most emotional aspects of book production, and one that I’m always on the edge of my seat about. Just this week I was able to see the cover for my next release, and share it with readers, over on my website. It’s very different from Burning Sky, but designed by the same artist, Kristopher Orr.

  4. Thanks so much for having my back, Brenda! 🙂

Love that video clip — very reassuring to know the thought and care that goes into creating a book cover. It was fascinating to see the various prototypes before they finally settled on one.

And wow — Laura’s new book is gorgeous. It’s coming out soon, right? October?

I’m chomping at the bit to get a copy of Lori Benton’s book. I think I will have to break down and buy it on amazon because my bookstore hasn’t gotten it in yet. Very annoying!

  5. Anytime, Kav. 🙂

Love’s Awakening has just released, so watch for it at your local bookseller. It’s fabulous, just like Laura’s other novels.

And Lori’s book is well worth the wait. The story & characters are fascinating, and her prose is beautiful–very similar to Laura’s.
