I Find You Not Guilty!

MP900385346[1]That’s right. I’m not guilty of indulging in guilty pleasures. I know the evidence is stacked against me, but–

What evidence you ask? Well, let’s see …

First there are the Marvel Avenger movies–I blame this obsession on my husband. He won the four free tickets to Thor in 2011. Thor? Really? Why on earth would I want to watch that? So, wrinkling my nose, I went to the movie … and fell in love. Seriously, ladies, Chris Hemsworth looks very nice up on that big screen. Not to mention, I loved the movie, the story line, the supporting cast, everything about it. Yes, I was hooked, and now I’m a full-fledged Avengers fan. Captain America? Oh yeah. Iron Man? All three movies. The Avengers? Saw it seven times in the theater. Yes, I said seven. That included an Avengers movie marathon that showed six Marvel Avenger movies in one day, including two Iron Man movies,Β The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, ending with a midnight showing of The Avengers. I won’t tell you how many times we’ve watched The Avengers at home–I probably can’t count that high.

Thor The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World comes out in November 2013. Captain America: The Winter Soldier releases in April of 2014. I have to wait until May of 2015 for The Avengers: Age of Ultron. πŸ™ Thanks to my husband, I just can’t get enough!

So, is that it for evidence against me?

Movie PopcornWell, not exactly. You see, when we attend movies, it’s a requirement to eat popcorn soaked in butter and sprinkled generously with salt. (You do realize that popcorn is merely a tool to eat butter and salt, don’t you?) Our family even has movie-theater popcorn-eating down to a science. We purchase one refillable bucket and bring four large bowls with us. No reaching across for that next handful, no sirree. (Actually we use large Country Crock containers. With the cover on, it’s easy to shake it, spreading the butter and salt evenly–as I said, we have it down to a science!)

But, naturally, healthy doses of buttery, salty popcorn shouldn’t be relegated to theaters only, it’s also the perfect snack to enjoy during your favorite TV shows like Blue Bloods (the family actually prays together on the show!!!) and Once Upon A Time and Falling Skies. Then there are the new shows coming out this fall that I can’t wait to see that will perfectly satisfy my popcorn cravings: Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — Yep, those Agents of Shield are Avengers. πŸ™‚ And, no, I’m not obsessed. Seriously!

You say their’s more evidence that I indulge in guilty pleasures? Hmmph! You’re going for the jugular, aren’t you?

Believe it or not, this has absolutely nothing to do with Avengers, but it is certainly a pleasure. Ever tried Fannie May Chocolates? The Trinidad with its rich, creamy chocolate center, coated in white chocolate mixed with toasted coconut. Then there’s the vanilla buttercream covered with dark chocolate, and the Carmarsh — caramel and marshmallow topped with chocolate. Your mouth watering yet? See, you’d be hooked too!

Then there are good books, quiet time, day trips up the North Shore … Ahh yes, I partake in it all!

So, with all that evidence stacked against me, how was I exonerated, you ask? Let’s just say the jury couldn’t turn down my my 2 Pound Box of Fannie May candy bribe. πŸ˜‰ Hey, no pointing fingers. You wouldn’t have turned down the bribe either!

(It’s just a good thing the prosecuting attorney never discovered my LaysΒ Sour Cream & Onion potato chip obsession–that might have put it over the top …)

What pleasures are you *not* guilty of?

  1. YUM…popcorn. It’s my favorite snack.

It does sound like you and your family have it down to a science. My family always says they don’t want any then they eat most of my small bag! Or so it seems to this popcorn lover.

  2. Buttery popcorn. Yum! And Lays potato chips-but I like the old plain ones best. They sure don’t last long at our house.

  3. What a fun post, Brenda. I’m with you on the Avengers. Can’t. Wait. Until. The. Next. Movies. And the Shield TV show. Will be so good to see Agent Colson again. Wow, I’ll have to try the smuggling bowl thing at the movies. With three of us, it works for the one in the middle to hold the popcorn bucket. But all the butter is on the top that way. I’ll have to try the chocolate. You made me hungry.

  4. Guilty pleasures? Hmm. Going to a first movie showing by myself – mostly ones my husband doesn’t want to see or is waiting for my evaluation of whether or not he’d like it.

Lipstick. Yeah, I have soooo many and continue to indulge in more. Crazy, I know. (And eye shadow.) (Sigh.)

Cookies. Big sugar cookies with pink frosting. You know the ones? Or Snickerdoodles.

    Okay. That’s enough!

  5. Avengers . . . LOVE them. Right up there with X-Men, Star Trek, etc. People always seem a little surprised at my Sci-Fi and Fantasy tendencies! πŸ˜‰

Did you watch “Sleepy Hollow” the other night, right after the season premier of “Bones?” Worth a watch! πŸ™‚

  6. @Shari – would you believe I have a friend who doesn’t like butter or salt on her popcorn? I’ve told her she’s not normal–which she already realizes. πŸ˜‰

I like plain old Lays too, but I rarely buy plain or sour cream & onion because I know I can eat them all.

  7. @Shannon – I knew you’d like the Avengers. πŸ™‚ I’m very bummed that I have to miss the series opening show of Agents of SHIELD.

As for smuggling bowls, you don’t have to. We never hide them (and we’ve been to numerous different theaters) and have never been told that’s a no-no. Periodically we’ve seen others bring in bowls, but it’s rare. To me, it just makes sense.

  8. Nicole – it’s rare that my husband and I don’t want to see the same movies. Actually, our kids seem to enjoy the same movies we do. It makes for fun family outings, but it’s difficult to get in a movie date night.

I know just the cookies you’re talking about. The kids love them–I try not to. πŸ˜‰

  9. @Regina – oh yeah, X-Men & Star Trek are right up there. I typically don’t read sci-fi / fantasy, but I really enjoy it in a movie.

We did watch Sleepy Hollow. Wow, was it intense! Loved it! That’s definitely one we’ll set aside time to watch each week.

  10. Marvel comic heroes? Who knew? I love them too. Which came as such a surprise because superheroes like Batman and Superman have always left me cold. Aside from the next Hobbit movie, the second Thor film is my most anticipated of the year. But I don’t do the popcorn. A small bottle of water and a few Dove dark chocolates is enough for me.

Blue Bloods and Falling Skies are both great shows! My verdict on Sleepy Hollow is still out. The opening shot “Hudson Valley New York 1781” made me squeal out loud for joy, and Tom Mison is wonderful… but I’m not sure yet about the rest.

PS: I’m reading Laura’s book now, so don’t enter me for that drawing.

  11. I’m not guilty of reading a lot. If authors didn’t write such great books, this would not be an issue. I’m also not guilty of drinking lots of mugs of home-made latte. I wouldn’t have any interest in hot drinks if I didn’t live where winters are 5-6 months long.

  12. No popcorn, Lori? Although I guess Dove dark chocolate does sound scrumptious!

It’ll be interesting to see where the spiritual angle of Sleepy Hollow goes to–that will definitely be a deciding factor in whether I continue to enjoy the show or not–but the debut did hook me.

  13. Debra – yeah, too many good books is always an issues, isn’t it? When that to-be-read pile is falling over like the Tower of Pisa, that’s probably a hint that reading is a not-so-guilty pleasure.

I’ll skip the latte, but nothing’s better than hot chocolate in the winter months.

  14. I’m with you on Blue Bloods and Once Upon a Time! Like can you believe that I haven’t seen any of the movies you mentioned? I’m in a movie vacuum. The demise of Blockbusters has done me in. πŸ™

  15. There is nothing better than a BIG bag of hot buttered popcorn at a movie. YUM!

I love Iron Man. I stumbled upon that first movie when a group of gals had our monthly movie night but there wasn’t anything good to see. The kid at the theater suggested Iron Man. We rolled our eyes but went into that one anyway. By the time it was over, we were all cheering and had fallen madly in love with him. πŸ™‚

  16. Oh my, Kav, you’ll have to find a way to watch the Marvel movies. Great stories, characters. The good guys always win. Start with Captain America and you’ll be hooked.

@Stacy – Robert Downey Jr. is so good at playing Iron Man. He somehow makes the snarky narcissist loveable. You’ll have to watch the next two movies.

@Karen – Can you believe I’ve never mixed chocolate & popcorn? I’ll have to remedy that.

@Bonnie – Thanks for stopping by today!

  17. I am a huge popcorn fan – have to have popcorn at the movies or it just doesn’t feel right! I do like to eat it with my fave shows on TV too, but I am not a fan of any of the movies or programs you mentioned. I am more into drama/romance, westerns, etc. but I am a huge movie fan. I have cravings for Hershey’s Hugs – love the milk chocolate mixed with white chocolate! Reading – I partake in that any chance I can get – I also cannot say no when I find a book I really want to read – I tend to snatch it up and add it the growing pile I have to read.

  18. What a great idea about bringing your own bowls for the popcorn. We always bring the white cheddar powder, my job is to keep it sprinkled over every new layer of popcorn! And have them put butter 1/2 way thru plus on top..then walk over to the butter machine where u can douse tons more on top. I take this pretty serious!

Now to sit and read one of these books….

  19. Oh, my guilty pleasure is reading… even better if I’ve got a Twix and icy Coke beside me! πŸ˜‰ Love BOTH of these authors — and hoping to win one of the books!

  20. It is funny to see others with the same “guilty pleasures” as me! I love the show Blue Bloods and actually Rookie Blue, also. Love the Avengers movies and really love Iron Man 2! Doesn’t seem go along with my love of Christian romance novels! I also love a good bubble bath. Thanks for the chance to win. I just signed up to follow you by email.

  21. @Lori L – you can’t go wrong with Hugs–I just wish they were a bit bigger.

@Melody – the theater we go to has a lot of different flavorings to put on the popcorn. Another advantage of bringing your own bowls is then everyone can put their own flavorings on top.

@Stephanie – Reading & chocolate? Sounds like a perfect combination!

@Brittany – A bubble bath accompanied by a good book sounds delightful, doesn’t it?

Thanks, everyone, for stopping by today!

  22. Wow, what a awesome giveaway!! I’ll get the popcorn and chocolate. Oh, I’ll have to have soda too. Then read to my heart’s desires. Both books are fantastic. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this giveaway. Please enter my name in the giveaway.

  23. Oh my, guilty pleasures? Do I have any> Now let me think. Well, to be honest I guess I do have a few. To start off most anything chocolate, but not the dark healthy kind. πŸ™ Better yet the kinds with caramel inside. Yummy! Candy, Fudge, pies, ice cream. Did I miss something? I also love ACTA buttery popcorn when watching TV or on my Mac. But my really guilty pleasure’s are Books and my Computer. I would love to have either of these great books. Should I cross my fingers or maybe wish upon a star? πŸ™‚ Thanks!

  24. I’ve enjoyed watching the Iron Man movies. 4 (out of 5) of my siblings and I saw the 3rd one in theater together. Good times.
My family loves eating popcorn while watching a movie at home – good thing we own a popcorn popper!

As for a favorite TV show, one of my sisters and I really enjoy cuddling on the couch while watching NCIS or NCIS:LA. Especially if no one else is home at the time and we can make it as loud as we want. πŸ™‚

And who DOESN’T like chocolate? My favorite is York Peppermints…. yum!

Good books, quiet time (a rarity at home where I’m the oldest of six, or at work as a nanny for young children), and trips to camp in the mountains of West Virginia are also favorites.

Hmmm…I guess I’m not guilty of anything, am I? πŸ˜‰
